Senior AI Engineer (Robotics Research Center) - Technology Innovation Institute, Abu Dhabi
Job Summary
The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is a publicly funded research institute in Abu Dhabi, with scientists, engineers and mathematicians from around the world. This opening is in its Robotics Research Center. TII wants a senior engineer who is comfortable with both research and building real systems, especially large language models (LLMs), vision-language models (VLMs) and AI agents that can plan and act on their own.
Key Responsibilities
- Train, fine-tune and optimize LLMs and VLMs so they work well in real-world uses.
- Build agent systems that can reason in several steps, plan tasks and use tools.
- Create fast, scalable systems for running large models, using tools like DeepSpeed, vLLM, TensorRT or ONNX Runtime. This includes distributed training and deployment on edge devices, GPUs and cloud platforms.
- Keep up with new work in LLMs, multimodal models and autonomous agents.
Skills the employer lists
- AI and ML: transformers and multimodal models, fine-tuning (LoRA/QLoRA), quantization, distillation, model evaluation, reinforcement learning from feedback (RLHF, RLAIF), and knowledge of neurosymbolic methods.
- Agent tools: LangChain, LlamaIndex, AutoGPT, CrewAI, OpenAI Agents, and Hugging Face. You should also be able to design reasoning loops, memory and multi-agent coordination.
- Programming and tools: Python and C++; PyTorch, TensorFlow and Hugging Face; vector databases such as Pinecone, FAISS, Weaviate and Milvus; plus Redis, Kafka, MLflow and Weights & Biases.
- Systems: Docker, distributed training, CUDA and GPU optimization, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in computer science, AI/ML, robotics or a related field.
- Proven hands-on work with LLMs, VLMs or agent frameworks.
- Experience running AI systems in production at scale.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- A plus: reinforcement learning, a robotics or simulation background, and AI conference publications.

Career Preparation Guide & Candidate Advice
- Who this role suits:
This is a good match for AI engineers who have already put models into production and want to work where AI meets robotics. If you have only done coursework projects, it may be too senior.
Tips to prepare for the Senior AI Engineer role at TII
1. Make your CV match this job
- Put LLM, VLM and agent work in your first few lines, not at the bottom.
- Show production experience with numbers: model size, latency you reached, number of GPUs, or traffic served. The listing asks for “production at scale,” so this matters most.
- Name the tools you actually used, such as vLLM, DeepSpeed, TensorRT or ONNX Runtime. List only what you can discuss in an interview.
- Link your GitHub, Hugging Face models or papers. The listing mentions publications as a plus.
- If you have any robotics, simulation or embodied AI work, even a small project, give it its own line. This role is in a Robotics Research Center.
2. Build a small portfolio project if you lack agent experience
- Make a simple agent that plans several steps and uses tools (for example, a web search and a calculator).
- Fine-tune a small open model with LoRA or QLoRA and write up the results.
- Optimize one model for inference, for example with quantization, and show the speed and memory difference.
