Career Preparation Guide & Candidate Advice

Who this role suits

This suits a senior civil engineer who has already supervised the construction of sewage or wastewater treatment plants and is comfortable leading site teams. It isn't a role for early-career engineers: the listing asks for 10 years overall and 5 years on STP projects. UAE or GCC experience gives you an advantage.

A day in this job (general picture, not an official schedule)

You might begin with a walk around the site to check the progress of tanks, foundations and underground works. During the day you'd review drawings and submittals, speak with the contractor, check inspection and test results, and deal with safety issues. Later you'd update your progress report and prepare for the next meeting.

What to show on your CV

  • The STP or wastewater projects you worked on, with capacity, value and your role.
  • Structures you supervised, such as aeration tanks, clarifiers or pumping stations.
  • Numbers: team size, concrete volumes, tests managed, completion dates.
  • Your UAE or GCC authority experience, if you have any.

Skills to refresh before applying

  • Water-tightness testing methods for tanks and pipelines.
  • Waterproofing systems and common defects in water-retaining structures.
  • Reading ITPs, method statements and NCR procedures, and how interim payment quantities are checked.

Documents to prepare

  • CV that highlights your 10+ years and your 5+ years on STP projects
  • Degree certificate and experience letters
  • Professional registrations or approvals you hold
  • Passport copy and a recent photo

Common application mistakes

  • Listing general civil experience without showing the 5 years of STP or wastewater work the listing requires.
  • Describing the project's scale but not your own responsibilities.
  • Not mentioning testing, handover or QA/QC work, which this job covers in detail.

Mini glossary

  • STP: a sewage treatment plant, which cleans wastewater before it is reused or released.
  • BOQ: bill of quantities, a list of the items and amounts of work in a project.
  • RFI: request for information, a formal question to the designer or consultant.
  • ITP: inspection and test plan, which sets out the checks needed for each type of work.
  • NCR: non-conformance report, which records work that doesn't meet requirements.
  • Dewatering: removing groundwater from an excavation so work can proceed.
  • Snagging: checking finished work for small defects that need fixing.
